The short, glossy, dark green winter needles of the "Variegated Oriental Spruce" are overlaid by butter-yellow new shoots in the spring. This produces a truly dazzling effect and it is easily as showy as most flowering plants. 'Aureospicata' always elicits exciting comments from people when they see it in May. As the summer begins, the new needles completely elongate and gradually turn back to a dark glossy green. It grows as a narrow pyramid, which allows it to be used in smaller landscapes than most other tall growing evergreens.
