'Vanessa' is a rare, more upright-growing form of the better known shrub, Parrotia persica 'Select'. The leaves on this fine selection turn vivid red and gold in early fall. Spidery crimson flowers bloom on the bare winter branches and remain through early spring. Like the species, the bark of 'Vanessa' will flake when the tree is well established. In a ten year span this shrub will likely grow to eight or nine feet tall. Its best performance will result if 'Vanessa' is planted in well-drained soil, in a sunny location, and is sheltered from harsh winds. Zone 5 - 8
