Corylus avellana 'Contorta'
Harry Lauder's Walking Stick
How many plants can you recommend to your customers that actually look better in the winter? Here's one! The twisted branches, of the Contorta Filbert, make this plant a real eye-catcher. In spring, summer, and early fall, it has large crinkled leaves so dense that they hide the exaggerated corkscrew appearance of the limbs. So to great extent, this is a more interesting tree in winter when the branches are bare and their peculiar windings are most obvious. The foliage stays a consistent green throughout the summer and turns to yellow by mid-November. It is named after Sir Harry Lauder (1870-1950), a Scottish music hall entertainer who left a lasting image of himself holding a twisted walking stick, in the minds of his fans. Zone 4 - 8
